Dofollow links are those links which comes with HTML attribute that allow search engine bots to follow the links embedded on a web-page. If your website/page is linked to an authority website with Do-Follow attribute then, Google bots follow your link and passes some amount of link juice and authority from that website where you are linked.
Yes, do-follow backlinks help in influencing the PR of your website by transferring sufficient amount of link juice, authority and reliability from linked website.
Google has stopped displaying the PR metrices from DEC 2013, however PR is still a ranking factor for webpages.

links are a vote for quality. All the links are do follow links until they are changed to no follow links. web crawlers follows the do follow links. Do follow links influence the page rank. -

Dofollow links allow google (all search engines) to follow them and reach our website. Nofollow links attributes do not allow search engine bots to follow link.So that is the difference between them :) -
