If you know about ecommerce or you at least prowl the internet often enough, you must have heard about Shopify. If not, here’s a brief overview. For more in-depth discussion about its capabilities, go here and check the infographic below.

Shopify is a huge cloud based ecommerce platform that allows merchants showcase goods and complete sales transactions.

It was founded by Tobias Lutke, Scott Lake, and Daniel Weinand. Shopify is one of those companies created out of a need for a better experience. Tobias was not happy with the type of ecommerce platforms available at the time, so, being a programmer, he decided to build his own.

Shopify was founded in 2004 and finally launched in 2006. One of the best things about the platform is its ease of use. Many users have applauded how easy it is to set up a shop, customize it, and get it ready for commerce.

And from how the platform evolves, it is apparent that it has its users’ best interest at heart. It is constantly adding features that make both the merchant’s and buyer’s experience a pleasant one. Shopify allows merchants accept payments through credit cards and other POS systems without the use of any third party. This does not only make transactions fast and easy, it also saves money on extra charges.

Amazon closed down its Amazon Webstore service for merchants so it can replace it with Shopify. Amazon also integrated with Shopify so its merchants can sell goods on Amazon, which definitely gives them access to a whole lot more customers.

This platform supports small and medium businesses in about 175 countries, with over 400,000 active users. Therefore, you can be sure these merchants are making money as the total sales volume on Shopify is over $34 billion.

If you take a quick look at the number of active merchants on Shopify, as well as the volume they pull off, the most obvious thing over the years is growth. This is also an indication of how well Shopify is performing as an ecommerce platform.

If anything, the growth rate of this platform is sufficient enough to show that its future is secure. But if that is not enough, it might suffice to point out that Shopify gets decent funding from investors as well.
