We can set up a computer network by just arranging computers by some means together with  the use of cabels and just installing the network interface card  NIC  in each terminal so that plug can work.

Then the operating system is required to make your network work using its software. We can also create network without using wires called as wireless  networks.

Then in this case each terminal have the network adapter for its connectivity.

A Simple Network Structure

This figure shows a basic network with the three terminals. All these terminals are connected by the cables to the central device called the Network Router.

Network Stations

The device we used to make the interconnection are called the host systems. These hosts are connected to the subnet . They will carry the message from the host using the transmission lines.

Network structure can be thought with

   - Data terminal equipment (DTE).
   - Data circuit terminating Equipment (DCE) concept.

To specify the exact nature of interface between DTE and DCE various standards and protocols have been developed. DCEs and DTEs are connected in two ways. A high degree of cooperation is essential in DTE-DCE combination, as data and control information is to be exchanged. They can be connected in two ways

   - Point to point configuration: Here only two DTE devices are in the channel

   - Multidrop configuration: Here more than two devices are connected to the same communication channel.
