I was first also hesitating a lot when I just started, but I think Unity is what you need. If you're having trouble understanding what's going on, try GameSalad and its tutorial to give the very basic idea of game engine. If it's not enough, try Constructor.
Good luck playing with them! :)

That is a very common question these days. It pretty much depends on what you want to create, because some engines are better for 2D and mobile games while others are better for AAA quality pc/console games. I worked in UE4 and I love that engine because is just awesome how easy you can create some awesome things, but I work in Unity because, in my opinion, is easy to learn, easy to use and it is pretty powerful, but after all.... all engines can be "The Best" if you know how to uset them. I would recommend to play a little bit with all and after you do that only you can pick the best engine for you.
Even though I started working in Unreal Engine 4, I ended working in Unity, so don't worry about it. It's only a matter of time while you will pick yours. ;)
Good luck and have fun. :)

It depends on which programming language you are comfortable and type of the game you want to built. If you are good with C# or Javascript go with Unity, if C++ then Unreal is good for you. There are many other engines in market. But, game engine will not make any difference, its how you utilize your skills and knowlege to use features provided by engines will make a difference. So, pick any one and start building your skills. You can make any kind of games from Unity or Unreal. Best Luck!!!!!
