General Packet Radio Service is based on packet transmission of data to the users.
GPRS works with the existing GSM architectures for the switching nodes.
The GPRS uses the same radio channel as defined for GSM.

Components of GPRS
Cell: Cell is a well defined area for a network.
LA: A group of multiple cells forms a a Location Area. Each LA is assigned a Location Area Identity (LAI). Each Location Area is served by one or more BSCs.
MSC/VLR Service Area: The area covered one MSC is the MSC/VLR area.
PLMN: The area covered by the network operator is PLMN.
GSM Service Area: The area in which the network is accessible.
