Guru Nanak Dev University was established in Amritsar 1969 on 24 Nov, to honor Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji's 500th birthday. It is both a residential and affiliated university. When conceiving the new University's future course, the objectives enshrined in the Guru Nanak Dev University Act 1969 emphasized that the new University would make provision for imparting education and fostering research in the humanities, learning professions, and sciences, particularly applied natural and technological sciences.

The MHRD has named GNDU as one of India's top ten "High Performing State Public Universities." GNDU has been steadily improving its NIRF ranking over the last four years, and in 2020, it will be ranked 51st. In the WEEK- Hansa Research Best University Survey 2019, Guru Nanak Dev University is placed 7th in North Zone Multi-Disciplinary Universities and 14th in All India Multi-Disciplinary Universities. In the "India Today Ranking-2020," GNDU is ranked 11th among India's state universities. According to the India Today (MDRA) poll, GNDU is the 17th best university in India.

In a relatively short period of time, the University has managed to carve out a niche for itself in the country. We had the honor of hosting the 28th North Zone Inter-University Zonal Youth Festival 'Guldasta' under the auspices of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU), New Delhi, and the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India, in recognition of our strengths. Unraveling Mysteries of the Brain in Health and Disease, a four-day international conference sponsored by the Indian Academy of Neurosciences was also held at the university.
